Here at CakeSupplies we like to give you, our customer, fun and beautiful inspirational content. With the cake designer of the moment we want to show you what creative cake designers there are and what great cake creations they can make.
Every time we ask the cake designer 10 of the same questions. With different experiences and a different view on the job, different stories will come out every time. Our very first cake designer of the moment is Sara from Rosie's Cake Studio.
- Can you introduce yourself? Who are you and what do you do?
I am Sara founder and designer of Rosie’s Cake Studio. I make luxury cakes and treats. - How did you start with cake designing?
I grew up with a grandmother who used to bake every week, she loved to make cakes and I loved to help! That’s where I learned to bake. In 2013 I decided to open a cafe with homemade cakes and sweet treats. But 3 years in I realised I only wanted to create luxury cake and I jumped out of the coffee/cafe business. So I started the cake studio. I am self taught with so much ideas and creativity I still love every minute of creating unique pieces of cake art! - What is something you are mosts known for (for example your signature cake)?
My signature style are tall rustic butter cream cakes with fresh flowers and gold splashes. Besides the cakes I do macarons, cupcakes, personalised biscuits, cakepopsicles and different chocolate treats. - What is your favourite thing to make and why?
I love my floral Cakes and doing the flower arrangements on the cakes. And I love making my really colourful cakes just splashing out colours. - What is something you haven’t made or done yet but really want to do?
There is always new trends that are fun to try and make. But at the moment there is nothing special, I am absolutely loving doing my signature style. I’m only trying to introduce luxury acrylic personalised cake toppers and cake charms in Sweden. I love adding this to my cakes. And I work closely with Zoi & Co to deliver the prettiest toppers specially made for my cakes and occasions.
I started on my cake tools which I wanted to do for a long time and with help from Zoi & Co I have released the first tall cake scraper and there will be more to come. - What are your favourite brands/products to work with?
No doubt FunCakes! Super great products, loving the Deco Melts, the powders and gel colours. When it comes to toppers and personalised acrylic products it’s Zoi & Co and I love Renshaw Fondant. - Can you describe your typical day?
Drawing and designing, finding inspiration, going through orders, mails and payments. Then baking and ensemble and lastly the decoration. - Has a cake ever really failed?
Yes, I have had a few accidents... but only at times when I still had time to bake it all over again even if it meant no sleep for a whole night. - Do you make and style the photos yourself? And what is your best tip for food photography?
I do it all myself. I try to have my photo session in the middle of the day after lunch when the natural light is the best. My tip is to use daylight, no clutter or too much colours around, you want your cake to be the center of the photo. Unless it’s styled photos with table settings et cetera. A few good camera lights are well invested and maybe a backdrop. - What would you advice a beginning cake designer?
Stay true to yourself! Do not copy, if you see a cake you like then take inspiration from it and make your own but never ever copy someone. And never forget to tag the artist you take inspiration from.
